MICHAEL AND THE MOONLIGHT

About the Project

.

The project started in the fall of 2010. I was working on a music blog where I was attempting to write and record a new song each week and share it. While being happy with the results, I wanted to do something a bit more grand. I have always been enamored with the pop productions of the mid sixties, particularly the work of Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, and David Axelrod. So, I set out to make a record in that style. The kind of record where the focus is the sound of a large group of musicians playing all the elements of the song at once, in the same room.
I recruited fellow musicians that I either currently play with in other groups as well as some additional local musicians from groups such as; Dragons Power Up!, Cloud Hidden, Big Cats!, Wizards Are Real, the Crooks, Me And My Arrow, New Century Masters, White Whales, Aldine, Invisible Flying Machine, and others. They are as follows:

Percussion - Derek Jackson, John Vance, Jordan Wirth-Davis
Bass - Chris Tures, James Tschida
Guitars - Joe Adrian, Dan Ries, Michael Coyne
Pedal Steel - Brian O'Neil
Piano - Michelle Vance
Organ - Spencer Wirth-Davis
Saxophones - Eric Bloomquist, Melanie Bergstrom, Drew Brown
Cello - Renee Klitzke, Addison Wasson
Viola - Robin Heinonen
Violin - Claire Sigford

8 songs were recorded in January of 2011 with Neil Weir of the Old Blackberry Way at Waterbury studios in NE Minneapolis. 2 singles were released online later in the year featuring the vocals of Matt Schuffman on "Nothing's Different", and Joe Adrian on "Julieanne".

In September of 2011 I began writing for a new instrumental EP that was recorded on January 7th and 8th of 2012 at Flowers Studios in Uptown. The record is being finished and mixed, and will be released in late March of 2012. There is a preview available of the intro track on the main page.
